NEPALESE PROFESSIONAL MEET UP EVENT IN DC AREA

Talks by professionals for the benefit of the Nepalese community

TalkMandu, an initiative taken by a group of young Nepalese residing in the DC area, organized an event called ‘Nepalese Professional Meet Up’ on August 28th, 2016 at Arlington Central Library of Virginia. The main purpose of this very first event conducted by Talkmandu was to gather the Nepalese professionals from in and around the DC metro area on one platform to provide an opportunity for networking, sharing ideas, and generating potential collaborations.

The event started with the welcome note from Dr. Bishal Bhandari followed by the talk from the guest speaker, Mr. Karna Shakya, a renowned social entrepreneur and the nature conservationist, who was introduced to the audience by Dr. Roshan Lal Shrestha. Mr. Shakya inspired the crowd by asking to fill the wide open vacancy of entrepreneurship role currently available in Nepal in the sector of business, tourism, and science & technology. He suggested that there are multiple ways to contribute for social upbringing and gave an example of his own campaign about “Nagarik Aviyan” which is dedicated in the making of better citizen. His social transformative agenda was highly praised by the audience. Then followed two talk sessions, each led by session chairs Dr. Sugandha Tuladhar, an economic consultant and Dr. Prajwal Regmi, a regulatory scientist at FDA. The session format and session chairs were introduced by Dr. Manoj Rajaure, a post-doctoral scientist at NIH.

Attorney Bandita Sharma-Dahal delivered the first talk of the first session. Ms. Sharma-Dahal briefed the audience about her role as a lawyer to correctly solve cases of immigrant’s domestic violence issues. She appreciated the event and elaborated the role of the first generation migrants to uplift generations ahead. She also emphasized that a person should always be curious, that is what made her choose the career of a lawyer. The second speaker Mr. Season Shrestha, an entrepreneur and a philanthropist, detailed that how successfully Nepali handicrafts can be promoted in the US market through a family business model. He also mentioned about his involvement in different organizations that has made difference in his personal and professional development. The last talk of the first session was delivered by the renowned journalist and former presenter of BBC Action Media’s ‘’Sajha Sawal’’, Mr. Narayan Shrestha. He touched on the subject of political factors that are backlashing the development of Nepal and embellished his narrative by displaying stunning pictures of various regions of Nepal that he took during his travelling as journalist. He urged for making commitment to promote and develop various regions of Nepal from whereveror whichever way you can. Although undecided, after completion of Global Affairs studies from University of Maryland, he plans to return back to Nepal and get involved. He expressed the need of new vision among political powers to realize the good interest of people of Nepal.

After a brief break for refreshment, the second session chaired by Dr. Prajwal Regmi started with the energetic talk by Mr. Prabhash Shrestha, the VP of Technology at American Gastrological Association and the adjunct Professor at Georgetown University. He encouraged participants to differentiate own-self from rest of the crowd by being productive and creative in order to create his or her own identity.He spoke of the long road he has travelled abroad that even at times of despair, desire to explore new ventures and to get out of comfort zones helps every individual attain satisfaction and overall success. Mr. Prabhas kept participants inspirational with his own mottos and elaborating on Ziglar’s quotes; “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great”. The energy of the event continued with the talk by Dr. Madan Uprety, a medical doctor and an entrepreneur. Dr. Uprety spoke about his life progression from a village of Nepal to the capital city and ultimately to the United States. He summarized that students ought to adopt more ‘outside of the box’ attitude rather than following what has been told to them. Audience were amused by his factual accomplishments about, how he went on to become a successful doctor who once was a boy with interest in physics, mathematics and business. He underscored his vision that person should be judged by his ability, not by their merit of high scoring points. At the end Dr. Uprety concluded his talk by encouraging qualified participants to apply for job at some of the available positions at his clinics. The last talk of the session was delivered by Dr Sanjivan Gautam, a Nepal Bidhya Bhushan Padak Ka, Kha and Ga awardee and a biomedical researcher at National Institutes of health, USA. Dr. Gautam started the talk with his career milestone and briefed the audience on how his research in immunotherapy against cancer has led to the technology transfer to one of the pharmaceutical companies in the USA in process of developing anti-cancer therapy. He concluded his talk with the information on Center for health and disease Studies-Nepal (CHDS) which he co-founded in 2015 and invited for any collaboration for biomedical research in Nepal.

In the event, TalkMandu also introduced an emerging entrepreneur Mr. Sujit Shakya of Himalayan Soul Foods who shared his journey from Soaltee Crown Plaza, Ktm to establishment of food truck in Washington D.C. Another motivational personality introduced by TalkMandu at the event was Ms. Elena Shrestha, a PhD scholar of Aerospace engineering and National Science Foundation awardee. Ms Shrestha described very briefly about her research in the development of cyclocopter at Micro Air vehicle laboratory, University of Maryland.

After the formal talk sessions Mr. Pushkar Prajapati, a member of TalkMandu team announced the conclusion of the formal event with vote of thanks to all the speakers, session chairs, sponsors and participants. Mr. Prajapati called all the team members and volunteers of TalkMandu over the stage and introduced to the audience.

The last part of the event featured with amazing live unplugged musical performances by Sujay Shrestha, Sharif Siddiqui, Divakar Dhaubhadel and Sushil Lal Shrestha was highly entertaining and ecstatic.

The event would have not been well executed without the best sound system provided by Mr. Sugandha Shrestha and excellent hosting by the MC and a team member of TalkMandu, Ms Alisha Gautam. The participants registered online as well as offline at the door during the event. Offline registration was managed by the team of Sameer Sijapati, Nirmal Singh, Ashok Oli, Sumee Thapa and Rakshya Shrestha. The catering throughout the event was managed by Dipan Ghimire , Dharma Joshi and Ashish Sijapati. Anil Ranjit helped with photography and media coordination. Bimala Prajapati, Preeti Shrestha, Mohani Kapali and Sita Shrestha served as volunteers.

The event was followed by happy hour at carpool, a local restaurant, where there was more interaction between the people

Participants expressed their encouragement and motivation from useful information and methodology provided by speakers relevant to various occupations. Speakers and participants both acknowledged good technical execution of the event and showed enthusiasm for similar future events by TalkMandu.

TalkMandu, a fairly new team, executed the successful event from contributions of members, without collecting funds from participants and with limited sponsorship. Team members gathered on the stage for closing and expressed gratefulness to the speakers, participants, volunteers, sponsors, supporters,media, technical assistance, musical team,and Arlington library.
